My Identity...something that I continually struggle with. Trying to find my validation by being a "people-pleaser", or by getting others to like me.Who does that right?
We were created in the image of God, our identity is found in Him, and in HIM ALONE, but I seem to forget this quite often though guys.
So here goes another lesson learned:
With the rise in social media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Tumblr, etc, I think we create a false sense of intimacy with people who we don't really know. It's easy to feel we know SOOOO much about a person's life, even if we haven't met them. That being said, the other day I was reading Galatians 4, and I read the verse saying "But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?". I didn't understand the part that said 'or rather to be known by God', and so I asked God...why did you put that there? I thought we were always known by you? What's the significance of this?
Flash forward a couple days later, and I was just browsing the net. Scrolling through my FB newsfeed I saw that someone made a post, lets call the person Bob. I don't really know Bob in real life or anything, but definitely admire his faith via his online display. I commented on Bob's verse, and that was that. At least..so I thought. Later that night before I went to bed I started thinking "man, bob didn't even comment or like my post"...knowing the way my mind rabbit trails, it turned into a whole pity party for myself. "God, these people don't even known me. I have no significance, I'm nothing..never gonna be anything great for you kingdom..yaddi yaddi yah". Once again I was secretly looking for validation through attention from someone else. boo me. That's when the Holy Spirit brought to my remembrance the verse in Gal 4:9.
"But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?"
The fact that I knew God was a big deal, yeah, BUT THE FACT THAT GOD KNOWS ME...and STILL loves me...THATS A HUUUGE DEAL. I mean, many of us can say we know President Obama, or Oprah, or Brad Pitt...we might follow them on Twitter, and based on how much info they share online, we can even know what they ate for dinner, but they have no idea who we are. The type shared between husband and wife, and once stirred by reciprocity So I AM AMAAZZZEED! The Creator of the universe knows me intimately. I have a real relationship with Him. I am His and He's mine. That is a mind-blowingly amazing truth.
Don't get me wrong, God knows everyone...he is Omniscient, but the knowledge described here is a an intimate knowledge.Bible gateway has a detailed commentary on this verse.Check it out http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+4%3A9&version=ESV
Really encouraging blog! I can definitely see this problem in a part of my life. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteAmazing post and inspiring.
ReplyDelete"God knows me" reminds me of Psalms 139:1-18. Thought I'd share this with you:
I. God is sufficient to meet your needs, because God alone knows everything (Psa. 139:1-6)
The term for “known” is yada, a verb, which carries the connotation of intimacy. This is not a cold factual knowledge. The psalmist in Verse 7 introduces a new term for “knowledge” which in Hebrew carries meaning not only of mere knowledge, but also understanding. Thus the understanding of God’s knowledge is great. Thus, this knowledge is an intimate knowledge, a love, not just cold.
II. God is sufficient to meet your needs, because God alone is always there (Psa. 139:7-12)
There is not a place in which God will not be present. This is reinforced/emphasized through the usage of synonymous parallelism such as is used in verse 7. “Whither shall I go…whither shall I flee…?” Not even the speed at which can flee will let one escape God’s presence as shown in verse 9. “Wings of the morning…”
III. God is sufficient to meet your needs, because God alone is all-powerful (Psa. 139:13-18)
God’s creative power was the forming and guiding power at birth. Each part of the creation was planned. It was not hidden from God. They were created in accordance with the “model of them in the mind of God” -John Gill
